He's unbelievable. He's really young too. Only just eighteen or something. He's a genius, you wait until tonight, you'll see.

Viktor Amit Zahariev Krumov (Bulgarian: Виктор Амит Захариев Крумов[1], Hindi: विक्टर अमित ज़हारिएव क्रमोव[2]) (born 9th September 1976), known professionally as Viktor Krum (Bulgarian: Виктор Крум[1], Hindi: विक्टर क्रम[2]), is a Bulgarian half-blood wizard. He's the only child born to Zahari Krumov and Aaryahi Krumova (née Mishra), a welcome addition to their family, as this was after years of the couple trying and failing to conceive. Viktor was initially mainly raised in the city of Pleven, Bulgaria in the height of it being People's Republic of Bulgaria in the world of muggles, leading to a lot of struggle for him during the first few years of his childhood, especially since he found it hard to blend in with the muggle children in the area. Throughout his childhood, Viktor would spend months in foreign countries, as his father was made the assistant of various ambassadors.

Again, due to his family's work, however, they spent a lot of time in Reykjavik, Iceland, as his father was finally promoted given a station there of his own as the Bulgarian Magical Authority's ambassador to Iceland, due to his knowledge of the "situation" there. He jumped at this opportunity as it would hopefully give Viktor, who seemed to struggle to make friends, a more stable life to build some confidence. Viktor still struggled to make friends in Iceland, though he did have a few, via his same-age cousin Ilia Róbertsson, who he was already close to and helped introduce him to people.

Viktor attended the Durmstrang Institute, while also acting as the Seeker for the Bulgarian National Quidditch team at the age of eighteen. For many years prior, he'd shown his skill by being one of the star players of the school; allowing Frigg's team to win the school tournament for several years in a row during his membership of the team (and later captaincy).

n 1994, he played in the final of the Quidditch World Cup. The Irish won the match, but Viktor caught the Golden Snitch to end the match before Ireland took too embarrassing of a lead. His team may not have won the World Cup, but he was still considered a legend at school, considering that second place was still pretty damned impressive.

Later in the year, he was part of the Durmstrang delegation sent to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the Triwizard Tournament, all those who were selected were heavily coerced by Igor Karkarov to enter. Viktor particularly didn't want to enter his name, but felt he had to and, to his dismay, he was selected. He was selected by the Goblet of Fire as the Durmstrang Champion, and competed bravely. He was unfortunately unable to compete for Frigg Hus in the Inter-School Quidditch Cup held that year, due to his being selected. Something that worried both Viktor and his friends and family.

In 1997, he attended the wedding of Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley as a guest of Fleur's. By this time he was already in a relationship with Yuriko Solberg, who he'd realised his feelings for ridiculously slowly. At the time, the papers apparently insisted that he was living in a Venetian apartment with an Italian witch called Valeria Soranzo, where this rumour came from is a mystery to him, as he and Val had only ever been friends. It, and similar rumours about Yuriko, were joked about amongst those who'd hung out with them during the Triwizard Tournament.

Viktor is a memeber of the Krumov family, the Mishra family, the Dragov family, and the Vandayar family, as well as the Solberg family (by marriage).

Etymology[]

  • Viktor (Bulgarian: Виктор[1], Hindi: विजेता[2]) is a form of the name Victor used in several languages, including Bulgarian, it's both a given name and a surname[3]. The name comes from Latin words meaning "winner" or "conqueror"[4]. Victor was common among early Christians, it was the name of both several early saints and three popes. French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885) bore the name, Hugo was the author of both "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Les Misérables", as well as the name of the character Victor Frankenstein, the main character of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", an alchemist who creates a creature[5][6][7][8]. Since it means "victorious", the name may have been intended to be ironic, considering that Vik competes in two world-famous tournaments in Goblet of Fire (both the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament) and loses both[9].
  • Amit (Bulgarian: Амит[1], Hindi: अमित[2][10]), as chosen by Viktor's mother, is an Indian name derived from the Sanskrit "immeasurable, infinite" [10]. It's somewhat irregular for a Bulgarian to have a middle name, however this was given to him so that he would also have a name from his mother's home country of India[11].
  • Zahariev is a patronym derived from Viktor's father's name: Zahari, the suffix "-ev" being common for patronymics[11]. The name Zahari itself is the Bulgarian version of the name Zechariah (more widely known as Zachariah)[12]. Zachariah is the name of a fair few characters in the Old Testament, this included the prophet Zechariah, authour of the book in the bible by the same name. Zachariah also appears in the New Testament of the bible, as John the Baptist's father was named Zachariah, a Christian saint[13].
  • Krumov likely comes from Krum, which is the name of one of the most famous Bulgarian rulers, who ruled in the Ninth century. Krum is, however, not a typical name in modern Bulgaria, being of pagan origin, and is in fact not a surname, but a given name[14], the surname Krumov is likely a surname given in honour of Krum, or alternatively to his decendents, this means it's possible that Krum himself was a wizard[15], "-ov" being added to it as it's a traditional suffix to Bulgarian-language family names and patronymics (family names often being derived from patronymics)[11][9].
